I LOVE YOU MELISSA

1 JUNE - 21 JULY 2019

OPENING 1 JUNE 2019

Well-known for its startlingly brutal architecture and melancholic past, The Lock-Up is a historic site long-associated with dominance, oppression and sadness. Found scrawled up a upon the walls one of the historical cells are the words I LOVE YOU MELISSA, a tiny memento, that in amongst a building’s history of despair and sorrow, love was and is ever present.

Using this piece of graffiti as the curator’s muse, eight contemporary artists have been selected to respond accordingly, showering The Lock-Up in love - love of the familial, love as devotion, lust, longing, love of lovers and lovers lost.

Artists include Caitlin Dempsey, Lucas Grogan, Marikit Santiago and Jodie Whalen.

Curated by Courtney Novak.
